"THE TOP TEN TASTE ADVENTURES OF 2001"
JOANNE KATES

Mr. Maharajah is a plain-Jane little place with divine indian food. Mulligatawny soup balances sweet and savoury spices in a lentil base, small pieces of tandoori chicken rub shoulders with peas and cauliflower, super crisp onion bhajia(deep fried onion fritters in chickpea batter); somky moist tandoori chicken atop grilled onions with lemony sauce. But my kingdom for Mr Maharajah's onion kulcha (baked in the tandoori). a flaky rectangle, the foccaccia of the subcontinent, with browned edges and sweetly cooked onions. Also fresh okra with browned onions and coriander in a sauce of fresh tomatoes. Mr Maharajah. 7 Balmuto St., Toronto 416-963-9360
